The model railroad followed the development of the railway at the foot because in 1850 there were known toy manufacturers who were making engines that were powered by real steam. Originally in various sizes and later standardized to scale. So we know track 1, track 0 (zero trace), trace H0 (half zero trace), etc. Around 1950 items appeared in this hobby as small model trains, electricaly powered models, with great succes, especially through the contribution of Märklin Germany.

Meanwhile there are many modelers still trying to make machines that are coal fired and steam-driven. There we have a standardization to the gauges 3, 5 and 7 which already exist. While this type of model in Britain has a huge success from the end of WW2, starting the hobby in Belgium only to spread from the end of the year 1960.

In 1972 this became more pupular by the activities shown by the "Train Group Turnhout vzw"  who organised model railway exhibitions "Rail International" in the Culture centre and later in the Merode Center Turnhout.

Among the first modellers in Belgium we notice Luc Tennstedt from Enghien and Raf Loosen from Mechelen.

The first club in Belgium who only dealt with this kind of modeling started in 1981 from this "Rail Group Turnhout vzw" and was born under the name "Stoomgroep Turnhout vzw". They took immediate aim: to operate a "and 5" railway in the city park of Turnhout.
